Did you know that Power Rangers were Japanese? Well the show is American but most of the suits, villians, morphed fight footage and the zord footage is all from Super Sentai tv shows that air in Japan.
It all started in 1975 when the Japanese tv station TV Asahi aired Goranger (pictured right). It would be shown every week until the following year when it would be replaced with a brand new Sentai.
This tradition continues to this day with a new Sentai show every year. But where does Power Rangers fit in with all this? That didn't happen until a television producer called Haim Saban saw a Super Sentai while in Japan and got an idea. Why now replace all the Japanese actors with American ones and use the morphed footage. We all know now that this turned out to be Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.
The footage used for Mighty Morphin Power Rangers came from the Japanese Sentai Zyuranger (pictured left). Although Alpha 5, Zordon and the Power Rangers story were American creations almost everything else came from Zyuranger. This is why Rita's voice didn't match the movement of her mouth. As that footage was Japanese dubbed over with English. If you tak a look at the Did You Notice? section you can see examples of the word Zyuranger appearing on various of the rangers weapons and morpher.
This tradition continues to this very day with most (but no all) footage as well as monsters, villians and a few other things taken from the Japanese counterparts.
